Offshore Product Re-engineering for a Healthcare ISV
A mid sized health care software vendor needed to take its product offering to the next level by
- Re-engineering from Unix based systems to .NET technology
- Adding a number of features to enable the product to compete effectively within a higher value market segment
- Ensuring HIPAA compliance
The engagement was envisaged as an offshore development project. The product being developed was a massive application with millions of lines of code, divided into twenty different modules addressing four different healthcare provider segments.
More than twenty offshore team members traveled to the US for requirements, design and beta testing stages. These offshore team members went back to Chennai with a better understanding of the people and processes that drove the requirements. The end result of all this interaction was a gradual integration of the offshore team with the customer’s development and product visualization functions.
Over a period of eighteen months, the fifty-person offshore team added increasing value due to their comparatively in-depth exposure to the next generation product. Exposure to ongoing installations helped the offshore team gain greater customer perspective. They were able to effectively help control troublesome installations.
Based on cost and value calculations, the customer reversed an earlier decision to perform product maintenance in-house in the US, and decided to move into an offshore based model. The demonstrated strength and depth of talent in the maintenance team has also caused the customer to work with Calsoft Labs to take ownership of the offshore center – as they now consider it a strategic asset. Calsoft Labs is now working with the customer to setup the offshore center as a subsidiary for the company.
